We all face stress throughout our lives, we can’t escape it. However, we can learn to deal with it better by making a plan ahead of time. Stress can destroy your health and your waistline, so it’s important to try and reduce and manage it better. Interestingly, women are more likely to report stress symptoms such as headaches, upset stomach, anxiety, and depression, over men (1).

  • Increased Blood Pressure & Heart Rate
  • Increased Risk of Heart Attacks & Strokes

MY PERSPECTIVE

Just like everyone, I have experienced all sorts of stress from day-to-day stress up to watching my mom suffer from pancreatic cancer and later passing away at an early age. Stress has negatively affected my sleep, energy, adrenals, hormones, and my mental health.

Fortunately, I have slowly learned to deal with stress better, started healing my body, and learned various tricks that help reduce my levels of stress before I have a panic attack.

I had to first realize that stress is inevitable, and I can’t always change the circumstances. If we CAN change them, then go for it! If we CANNOT change them, then we can focus on changing our attitude and how we react to the stressor. I also try to remember that stressing out is not helping me or the situation. It’s only hurting us, so what’s the point. It’s all about changing our relationship with stress.

20 WAYS TO LOWER YOUR STRESS

  1. A hot cup of tea sitting somewhere peaceful
  2. Call a friend
  3. Color in an adult coloring book or heck even your kids’ coloring book.
  4. Dance to your favorite upbeat song
  5. Find a motivational quote that resonates with you when you are stressed.
  6. Get some movement in like walking around the block, walk the dogs, jog, bike, etc. It doesn’t have to be long.
  7. Give your pets some love
  8. Journal
  9. Listen to some calming music
  10. Look at a photo of a happy memory
  11. Meditate
  12. Put on a quick 5-minute yoga video on YouTube
  13. Sit down and take some slow deep breaths
  14. Squeeze a stress ball
  15. Step outside and take a few deep breaths in the fresh air and sunlight.
  16. Stretch
  17. Take a bath
  18. Visualize yourself in your “happy place.” For me it’s the beach in Hawaii
  19. Watch funny videos on Facebook or YouTube
  20. Write down five things you are grateful for

HOW HEALTH PRACTITIONERS CAN HELP THEIR PATIENTS WITH STRESS

Patients deal with a lot of stress from their health condition, being away from home, finances, pain, side effects, and more. It’s important to first have some compassion and empathy for what they are experiencing. When I am working with patients that are being difficult, yelling, and rude, I have to remind myself about what they are going through, try to understand, and not take it personally.

Here is an excellent “Well-Being Survey” that patients can use to determine their current well-being and offer some stress management tips for them. They can use this tool periodically in their life and receive guidance.

Here are a few ways you can help your patients de-stress

  • Be there and just listen
  • Let your patients know what you are doing and why. Patients often have no idea what to expect and helping them to understand what you are doing and why can help.
  • Don’t tell your patient to relax. Instead, ask them how you can help them to relax. Allow them to share their needs with you and how you can help them.
  • Use humor when appropriate.
  • Dim the lights
